About Our Movie Film Transfer Service

Movie film is transferred via a two-step process. First, the film is run through a projector and captured digitally. Then, the digital video tape is imported to a computer. Finally, the movie film is edited to remove defects in the film and enhance the colors. Music is added, if requested, and chapters are set up. It is only possible to transfer one film job at a time. Typically, one is importing to a computer while the other is being captured digitally. Only one movie job can be edited and completed at a time, however.

Because old film is fragile, special care is taken to ensure that the movie film is returned in the same condition it was given to us. Breaks in the film are repaired with fresh splicing tape. Some film must be repaired from several pieces or from bad splicing before it can be transferred. Movie film that cannot be played without destroying it (e.g. film with severely damaged sprocket holes or exceptionally brittle film) is not transferred and is returned.

Jobs that are not currently being transferred are stored in individual plastic buckets off the floor in our climate-controlled office. Jobs are tracked via a database and kept organized in date order. No environmental damage will occur to film while it is in our office.
